MIYAGIKYO SINGLE MALT

Miyagikyo Single Malt is a range of single malt expressions from the Miyagikyo Distillery. Nikka's founder Masataka Taketsuru chose a valley in the Miyagi prefecture as the site for his second distillery, and started its operation in 1969. He aimed to make a complete contrast between the two distilleries, Miyagikyo and Yoichi, with different natural environments and production methods.

 

Miyagikyo malts are described as elegant and fruity. Made from light peated and non-peated malted barley, whiskies distilled in pot stills heated by indirect steam express a signature fruitiness and delicate mouthfeel.

This limited edition of Miyagikyo single malt was introduced in 2021 as the first of the “Nikka Discovery” series. In anticipation of Nikka Whisky’s 90th Anniversary, the series offers an inside look at the various experiments in the whisky-making process that Nikka has practiced over the years.
This expression is crafted solely from batches of peated malt, offering a significant distinction from the "light and fruity" image of Miyagikyo. It showcases the exquisite combination of bold, distinctively peaty notes, while leaving its signature estery hint in the aftertaste.

Limited Edition 2020 Miyagikyo Single Malt
Apple Brandy Wood Finish

47% ABV 700ml, 750ml (USA)

This limited edition has been finished in Nikka’s apple brandy casks and bottled in 2020 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Masataka and Rita’s marriage in 1920. At the foundation in 1934, apple products helped Nikka to keep the business sustainable while the first whiskies were maturing, just like Rita supported Masataka’s dream.
With a delicate aroma of apples, this expression showcases a beautiful harmony of finesse and sweetness brought by apple brandy casks and Miyagikyo single malt’s original characteristics such as distinctive hints of Sherry and spiciness like cinnamon.
